El Salvador is a beautiful country in the Americas. It’s the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America and has a long history of destructive earthquakes and volcanoes. There are twenty volcanoes in the country with two, San Miguel and Izalco, being active in recent years. Football is the most popular sport in El Salvador and they’ve qualified for two previous World Cup tournaments which is quite an achievement in a region with so many football powerhouses. Rodolfo Zelaya, of top local club Alianza, is a highly rated international player while rapping group Pescozada and model Irma Dinas have also brought international recognition to the country.
So were English indie rock band Athlete singing about El Salvador in their hit song of the same name released in 2003? Well for starters it’s not about the country in fact it has a rather elusive quality. It’s one of those songs that gets you listening and tapping along but you’re never quite sure what it’s exactly all about. Probably that’s part of its attraction.
Fly to El Salvador
I don’t know why and I don’t know what for
…I can’t quite put my finger on it
The song was the lead track on Athlete’s 2003 platinum selling debut album Vehicles and Animals. It was released as the fourth single from the album and charted at 31 in the UK singles charts. “El Salvador” is a beautifully crafted piece of music which is catchy and quite lovable and you can listen to it right here at Lovesongs247.
